XTRA is one of Sin­ga­pore’s lead­ing and pio­neer­ing retail­ers of design­er furnishing.


BRIEF

We were com­mis­sioned by XTRA to inau­gu­rate a design­er cal­en­dar series—one that is in line with their brand ethos as an advo­cate of good, func­tion­al design.


APPROACH

We want­ed a cal­en­dar that is well-designed and very useful—a response to typ­i­cal design­er cal­en­dars which often sac­ri­fice func­tion for form. The title, “Designed for every Tom, Dick & Lar­ry”, is a pun on a com­mon say­ing that draws a humor­ous link to the stu­dio’s name while empha­siz­ing the cal­en­dar’s func­tion­al­i­ty for any­one and every­one. Despite the min­i­mal­ist approach, the cal­en­dar pro­vides a con­sid­er­able amount of use­ful infor­ma­tion: pub­lic hol­i­days, term breaks, and even Chi­nese lunar dates. As a sub­tle reminder, the title block is print­ed on the reverse side, giv­ing a hint of our design mis­sion through the pages.

PRODUCTION LESSONS

Dense black lithographic printing on black stock was a first for both the printer and the studio. We had to control the density of the ink to ensure the text was subtle but still legible.
