Menus for Chez Panisse: The Art & Letterpress of Patricia Curtan catalogs the amazing array of special ocassion menus printed by Curtan, once a cook in the renown restaurant’s kitchen. While the norm is to print day-to-day menus on the laser printer on premises, special dates like New Year’s Eve, Bastille Day, or Chinese New Year, or special guests like Julia Child, Mikhail Baryshnikov, or James Beard prompt Curtan to create custom illustrations using linoleum blocks, metal type, and polymer plates on her 10 × 15 Chandler & Price platen press.
The results are gorgeous, elegant, and delectable and they are reproduced with excellent fidelity in this book that captures more than 100 of Curtan’s menus, each accompanied with notes on the menus, the ocassion, and the cooking. This is a fabulous book, documenting a treat that few people get to enjoy.
