Poster Contest Deadline

You have until midnight (Central Standard Time) tonight to submit your posters. As has been the case so far, we might ask you to make some revisions to meet our technical requirements. If you happen to be asked to make some changes you will have until this Wednesday the 22nd (same time as above) to resubmit your files — if you don’t, you are out of luck. We will try to review all posters as soon as possible to have feedback for you tonight and tomorrow morning.

Thank you for the overwhelming amount of submissions! (We have received upwards of 70 by now).

I don't recall... after the voting is over, will they all be credited? I want to know who did some of these! There's so much sweet work up there...

Armin’s comment is:

Rick, yes, after all the voting is done (online and the three judges') we will go back and credit every poster.

Judging from how the poster gallery has been set up so far, it might be a good idea to include the full text of the quote in the html of the judging form.

Some of the posters quotes are hard to read in their online format and since quote selection is a major part of the posters appeal, it would be nice to be able to read them fully.

Hate to create more work but...

Also are the guest judges reviewing the posters in an online format or in print? Just wondering.

That's a pretty good idea, I hadn't thought of it. Definitely more work involved, but could be helpful. It might be a case where only the posters that are undreadable will have some sort of caption… we'll see. Thanks for the suggestion.

> Also are the guest judges reviewing the posters in an online format or in print?

At one point we thought we were going to print them, but it might be a tad expensive to do so, specially after all the entries we have received. The latest "plan" is to send an HTML gallery, similar to the one that is up right now, along with PDFs of each entry so they can see all the details.

Will the receipt of all the posters submitted be acknowleged, or just the ones that need revision?

On Sep.20.2004 at 02:28 PM
Armin’s comment is:

Just the ones that need revisions or that we can't open.

Armin:

I'm against revealing the full text of the quotes.

In an actual email format. Since I'm in a minority of regular contributors that don't use their real names.

Just need something to B... about, its Monday.

On the other hand; if I do submit something it'll be readable.

Back to work. I've got to 3:00 am Eastern Standard time to submit something.

Pedro’s comment is:

After the deadline, the judges will select three winning posters and a public online voting will determine the fourth winning poster.

Does this mean that the voting will only be done for the remaining posters, i.e. first the three juried posters will be selected and then the remaining posters will be posted for voting the 4th??

Or how will this be done??

On Sep.20.2004 at 04:29 PM
Armin’s comment is:

It's actually the other way around. Through online voting we will first select one poster. We will then remove that poster from the entries that will be handed to the judges.

> Since I'm in a minority of regular contributors that don't use their real names

Maven, don't worry, we treat your anonimity with all seriousness here. If we were to "reveal" the quotes, they won't be formatted like an e-mail reply, so we would just put the quote itself and the name (or pseudonym) of the quotee.

Even stuffed, my file is still pretty large — around 12 MB. Are you sure poster@underconsideration.com has the bandwidth to handle all last minute submissions?

Yup, that's right — I'm squeaking in last minute with something. Can't wait to see everyones'.

This is crazy… more than 40 poster entries just today…

So, gee, thanks, I'll be up all night setting these up.

I mean that in a good way.

Aargh. I'm getting paranoid about the time difference. (I'm in Australia.) So right now, it's just after 7pm central standard time? Is that right? So I've got 4 and a bit hours?

I haven't completely misjudged and missed the deadline, have I?

In case you all found such a large amount of entries at the last minute a little overwhelming I thought I'd let you know that a graphic design class had a project which required a submission into the speak up poster contest. When you decided to extend the deadline, the deadline was extended for the project. And of course as students are always procrastinating, most of us were frantically tying up loose ends and trying to get everything in by the deadline. Hopefully we all made it. Sorry for the onslaught of late posters.

I just have to say that last night was great... I'm certainly not too thrilled with my own design (I'm sure we all have little things we look back on with a "D'oh!"), but I had a great time putting it together and wanted to thank all the crew at SpeakUp for putting this on.

We're testing its limits! I think some people have gotten their posters kicked back through an auto-reply e-mail from our server. So, if that's the case, please e-mail us (without sending the posters) to confirm that we got it.

LUCK OF THE IRISH, MY ASS.

So, I was all set to do my last minute (why change my M.O.?) design for the poster contest and my wife, daughter, dog and I went for a walk.

We stop at a neighbor's to say hi, we let the dogs play with each other. Yadda, yadda, yadda... I ended up in the emergency room.

So, who of you guys put the hex on me so I would not be able to enter? (Kidding, of course.)

Can't wait to see all the entries.

Good luck to every one.

Any estimate on what the final count was?

And you should've charged a nominal entry fee bro. Could've paid for a nice gift for the judges. Oh well.

As of last night, 103. And that does not include over a dozen that we sent back for corrections. Today, we received another 20-25. So I can safely say that this exceeded our expectations. I thought we would top out at 60-70.

> And you should've charged a nominal entry fee bro.

Yeah, that would have been a good idea, even at five bucks a pop, would have been a nice addition for the poster fund… eh, it's OK. We'll send the judges some cup cakes.

Thanks for the great contest, too bad I was #1 slacker, but hey next time right? Just curious if anyone out there has a resource (website or whatever) for other free or cheap design contest around? They are a great practice tool & heck it may even help build/strengthen a portfolio...

no, Armin, thanks for the hard work YOU put in. bravo and thank you for this event. i can hardly wait to see all the submissions. the ones you've already put up have just been so fun and awesome to look at.

because there were so many entries, are you going to do a thing where there are going to be finalists, like maybe 10 or so, and then we can vote among those? otherwise, wouldn't the voting be a bit spread out? i know, logistics, logistics. and more work for you! i'm sorry.

did i mention that you rock?

oh, and where do i send my five bucks?
