Designers/Retailers

Sometimes designing for clients is not enough. Maybe not enough creativity. Maybe not enough money coming through the door. Who knows? but more and more Graphic Designers are using their creativity to break into the retail market.

A great example is Oh Boy! design artifacts, who used to be known as Oh Boy! a Design Company, a San Franciso based firm with a strong portfolio specializing in Annual Reports. They even changed their name to Reservoir, to allow their Oh Boy! reputation to carry their retail line. Which is really nice by the way.

Other Designers who have taken a shot at retail are Tibor Kalman, with a line of really cool paperweights and Massimo Vignelli, with a not so exciting watch.

I was always a fan of the M&Co watches. It's not linked here, but I liked the fuzzy numbers one the best.

Don't forget Emigre. They've been putting out T-shirts, pajamas, mouse pads, and music for over a decade.

True. Lots of merchandise there.

But only designers know about emigre and know where to buy their products, which is online. I've seen their mousepads in a few museum stores, two or three. As opposed to the Oh Boy! line which you can buy anywhere in the US and in most boutiquey stores.
