Timeless

So I’m sitting here with my coffee and I’m feeling nostalgic.

Explanations, critiques or opinions are not necessary for Saul Bass.

or Paul Rand. Who gets your vote in that battle of the super heavyweights?

Probably one of the hardest questions to answer. Who are we considering for this prestigious title awarded by the prestigious community that we are?

-Paul Rand

-Saul Bass

-Milton Glaser

-Tibor Kalman

My vote would go out to...

Shit, I don't know.

...Milton Glaser. Yes.

It's quite strange, a few days ago I was reckoning about posting something about Saul Bass, I was even thinking of doing some kind of 'Bass style' flash intro for my site.

Just a coincidence, or maybe it's a nostalgia virus spreading all over?

Of the four, I'll admit I might have to pick Rand. Precisely because his work largely still seems anti-nostalgic and very contemporary. There's a cleanliness and crispness that (for me anyway) is timeless. Tibor and Milton look of their era to me --- not that that diminishes their greatness.

My personal opinion is that if you are the guy behind the IBM logo (Paul Rand), well there's no race.

Anyway, 2nd place for Tibor Kalman, mainly for his work on Colors (the magazine), while 3rd place for Bass, even if probably (my very ignorant opinion) his work is too much movie-bounded.

I have to confess I have absolutely no idea on who's Milton Glaser.

Milton Glaser's web site does not do justice to his work. He has two books that are just some of the best graphic design around. This one and this one.

And believe me, I'm not saying those other three are bad. Rand is the all time bad-ass whose work will never ever be considered bad. Tibor is just amazing, and smart. And Bass, well... he is just plain good, Imaginary Forces can only wish they could do what he achieved with the technology he had.

Milton Glaser is one of my personal influences, that's probably why I picked him.

You're absolutely right, my considerations about Glaser come from a 30 sec visit of his site.

Pretty unfair, actually.
