An assignment on practicing calligraphy in Arabic angered some students and parents, and in turn resulted in a Virginia school to close. News outlets immediately picked up the story furthering its reach. It’s a sad state when children can’t learn about another visual culture.

Afterhours just wrapped up its initial effort that pairs a jury-selected group of creatives and a charity to come up with a theme for the creatives to make some prints that benefit the charity. The 30 finalists worked around the theme of food, benefitting Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. (Disclaimer: I was one of the judges).
