One Day for Design is meant to serve as a conversation to act as a catalyst for defining — or, well, at least attempting to define — both what it means to be a designer in this era as well as what role the AIGA has in its development, advocacy, and support of its members.
As a disclosure of sorts: Other than being an AIGA member I have no hardcore vested interest in this. I am not actively involved in my local AIGA chapter nor in the national board (mostly because I quite literally have no time for additional involvement in design-related things). But I am passionate about design and I support any initiative that helps us feel stronger and more confident in what we do.
Questions that we will be addressing throughout the day might include:
a) What is the mission of design? How have its boundaries evolved?
b) What’s the purpose of design? To be pretty? Strategic? Brainy?
c) Does the profession need an authority? Whether it’s a single person or group of people?
d) What should an organization about design be and act like?
e) Do we need an organization at all?
And we’ll see where that leads.
