Director of Brand

San Francisco, CA

Zack McCune is Director of Brand at the Wikimedia Foundation. A sociologist by training, who authored the first academic study of Instagram in 2011, Zack believes in the global “collective” creativity of online platforms. He led early social media teams for MasterCard and Mountain Dew before joining the Wikimedia Foundation in 2015.

Zack’s creative work has been featured internationally by the BBC, BuzzFeed, CNN, AeroMexico, the National Parks Service, Good Morning America, Libertatea, and France 3. As a filmmaker, Zack remixes archival footage to tell new stories. His short films have screened at 36 festivals in 20 countries.

At the Wikimedia Foundation, Zack leads the Brand Studio, a global team he founded to inspire public awareness and support for Wikipedia. They work across 9 time zones to craft marketing campaigns, fashion collaborations, event activations, creative contests, mascots, merchandise, and memes. They reach more than 2 billion internet users a year.

about

Wikimedia Foundation

At the Wikimedia Foundation we work towards the vision of a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

We host a technology infrastructure that makes possible billions of visits to Wikipedia on a monthly basis. Since our founding in 2003, we have supported the hundreds of thousands of volunteer editors who edit, expand and curate the Wikimedia projects. We equip these volunteers with the most up-to-date tools, ensure connections to Wikipedia are fast, safe, and private, and develop new technology and products to meet the demands of our readers and editors.

We provide individuals and organizations around the world with funding to increase the knowledge on Wikipedia. We also undertake legal and advocacy efforts to protect people’s right to free knowledge.
