Project Description
Earlier this year Magasin III Museum for Contemporary Art presented an extensive Wåhlstrand creates large-scale ink wash paintings featuring monumental landscapes, compelling portraits and serene interiors. For the occasion Malmsten Hellberg designed a large format hard cover book, with Wåhlstrand’s works to date along with an essay by author Lars Norén.Typography throughout is Ivar, a new typeface from Letters from Sweden. Two text sections are printed on different paper and in a smaller format. The cover, as well as the box for an exclusive edition with a photogravure print by the artist, is covered in Curious Matter (a paper derived from particles of raw potato starch), and foil stamped. The cover has a tip-on-plate.

Challenge: To make a book that distinguishes itself from other art books and places Gunnel Wåhlstrand’s work in a contemporary context, while at the same time always putting the artist's intention first.Insight: Reproducing really large size works of art is challenging and is always a kind of interpretation!
