Project Description
Painstakingly researched and inspired by subway maps, these schematics position and link every point-of-interest in every state. And—like subway maps—positioning is somewhat distorted, detail is eliminated, and lines are straightened to create the most simple and memorable diagram possible. By approximating relative locations in an orderly and minimal fashion, we hope to create for the observer new mental maps that endure long after viewing.The colors were developed so that each state would look great with any other state. Dividing the country into 9 specific geographic regions, we created a palette that sweeps from west to east moving from cool blues to warm greens.
Production Lesson(s)
Printing on the Indigo was perfect for this project. We had 50 unique posters to print and we knew some would be in more demand than others. This way we could get 25 Massachusetts, 15 Texas, and 3 West Virginia—and just re-order as needed. The short run also allows us to make new versions as we receive edits and suggestions from customers.
