Project Description

"Unfolding the Saree" is a self-published zine that explores the Madonna/Whore phenomenon that is unique to the saree-wearing women of India.

Through the folds, we question the notion that the saree is attire for the 'modest' woman, track its appearances in pop culture as a 'sexy' garment, and its various other implications in cultural traditions.

The outside of the zine is a proportionately miniature saree, replete with 'pallu' pattern. The zine is hung on a replica wire hanger, and the inside of the zine describes what is found on the inside of the saree-it's wearer.

The material on which it is printed and its printing technique, a one colour serigraph technique, mimics that of the commonly seen Indian flyers used for promotional activities in bazaars.

Production Lesson(s)

The paper had to fold 24 times down to it's closed size, so it is rather large on opening, and a lot to fold. In the prototype, on the hanger, the zine would fan out, open up and drop off. So we used a 90gsm local coloured newsprint-like paper, to lessen this effect. We also devised a sleeve which helps a lot to keep it in check, because everytime it is opened up fully it tends to fan out. The large size coupled with the flimsiness, contributed to a lot of slip-ups, sticking to the frame, flapping around, so we had to go very slowly.  The hanger was actually the hardest thing to produce though.”
