Project Description

When we set out to make notebooks we wanted them to have an informative aspect. We figured if we're going to make yet another design-y notebook for creatives why not inform, educate, and celebrate the process of design and the details that make print special. These discussions lead to a ton of content which now makes up the Print Prologue guide. Our hope is that the notebooks, the guide and a future app can help serve as tools for emerging designers, small business leaders or even occasional reference for experienced designers.

Each Print Prologue notebook edition has a unique cover produced by varying print methods. On the front, you'll find the distinct print specifications of each book—ranging from the size, paper color, paper weight and machine by which the cover was printed.

Production Lesson(s)

We learned so many things from these first three notebook editions. The biggest lesson revolved around the binding method and page-to-page registration. Each notebook cover has a thumb index that corresponds to printed tabs on the page edges. During an initial bindery check, we determined that binding with folded signatures would not allow for the page-to-page registration required for the interior dot grid and printed tabs to align. A reprint was necessary and this time, it was suggested that the interior pages print and collated digitally. But changing the interior pages meant reprinting our covers so that the included print specifications reflected the new interior method. Two interior and cover reprints later, we're much more knowledgeable about our perfect binding options and one step closer to a much smoother edition-two print run.”
