Messestadt—one of the youngest boroughs in Munich— is built on a re-purposed airport. Created by Dr. Birgit Wolff, Honey of the Messestadt is created each year in a very limited edition and is available only to residents of Messestadt.

Project Description

In 1992, visionary planners transformed an abandoned Munich airport into an "eco-utopian" community. Concrete runways were replaced with tree-lined bike paths. Today, residents of this carless district invest in projects that directly benefit the community.

One of the products born of this unique community concept is Blütenhonig aus der Messestadt. Every year, only about 30 jars of this honey are produced, and none are sold or exported outside of the community. A product with such a rich story offered an exceptional opportunity to bind past, present and future together through an equally rich and distinctive design concept. It seemed only natural, then, to hearken back to those long, thin lines of one-time runways and taxiways to create the label and supporting brand identity presented here.

Production Lesson(s)

Firstly, that if you are designing in another language, you should always have a few friends around you who are fluent in it to help translate, and proofread everything. Your client can help, but to really get the project right, bring in some outside help.

Secondly, part of the special nature of this design is that it is so focused on the community. Throughout the project, ideas like adding a limited edition note could have been a total disaster if my client wasn't also committed to a quality product, and was fine with marking each label by hand.

This packaging design had to take into account cost (under 100€) but also factor in the time to assemble. We could have paid a lot for printing and die-cutting custom tags, but a rubber stamp hit the balance. Then, it also became important to teach the client how best to align and register the stamp on the labels — again, all things that could have totally fallen off the table if the client also wasn't committed to sharing the story of her honey. Having honest conversations about how much work goes into a passion project (on the client side) was really critical. And in the end, I'm glad they said yes to this approach!”
