A collaboration between Ontario College of Art & Design and designer Symon Oliver of ALSO Collective, Playshops was a twist on conventional academic workshops in which participants were encouraged to explore methods of play by actually playing. The subsequent publication documents the experiment in a multi-signature, belly-band-bound book that playfully folds out into 4 posters.

Project Description

Playshops was a collaborative project between OCAD University research labs, faculty, and Symon Oliver of ALSO Collective. Expanding on the conventional model of academic workshops, Playshops incorporated both theory and practice in an attempt to investigate methods of play and how they relate to research and innovation. The workshop itself was composed of practice-based exercises followed by discussion periods. The documentation, and post-workshop writing was gathered and designed into the Playshops publication. The publication can be read cover to cover as a conventional book; however, the signatures fold out into posters that relate to the individual exercises on play.

Production Lesson(s)

Content is key. The timeline for this project was oddly structured, and it forced us to consider the design, dimensions, and rough layout, before having content. This became a huge challenge as the specifications were defined before the content was added. It became an exercise in mediating design, printer specifications, and content creation. In hindsight, it worked out exceptionally well but never again will we start a project until all of the content is nearly completed, edited, and proofed.”
