These magazines/books are more ambitious than they may seem at first glance. Each edition considers the creative process through enlightening insight into inspirational individuals’ narratives, which focus on “the extraordinary in the ordinary” or “the investigation of simple ideas from alternate angles.” The design is meant to create harmony between the divergent content and create a sense that the reader may leisurely explore the subject matter sans conditions of linearity or chronology. This unencumbered navigational strategy along with the four sections of the publication are meant to reflect upon and represent the creative process.

Project Description

Our publication, as Jeremy Leslie of MagCulture describes it, deals with the extraordinary in the ordinary. We look for inspirational people—those who are passionate and offer unique insights into a lifestyle or subject matter—and we investigate often simple ideas from alternate angles.

Our editorial content is very much driven by narratives, with our stories looking to work twofold offering the reader the opportunity to learn something new as well as delving into an individual's personal narrative, to provide all round inspirational and enticing content.

We felt that the tangible format of a printed publication worked as the best medium to deliver the content, and we were meticulous about the tactile qualities of the publication.

The ambition was to create a simple and elegant design that allowed for all elements to work harmoniously. The name, Another Escape, refers to not only the content but also to the experience that the publication itself intends to offer; a pause for thought, and momentary retreat. We wanted the design to transpose a leisurely pace, a magazine that you can plod through, perhaps not sequentially, and perhaps spread over a duration of time. The navigation and maneuverability was an important consideration in the design, and we divided the magazine into four sections—Inspiration, Exploration, Process and Response—to reflect to creative process.

Our publication looks to straddle the area in between being a magazine and being a book, and we want our readers to feel that Another Escape deserves a sustained spot on their bookshelf, which is supported by our deliberately non time-sensitive content.

Production Lesson(s)

Things we've learnt:

It is good to leave enough time to, at multiple intervals of a project, take a step back and critically reflect on the progress so far. This has been a big learning curve for us. If you rush things then you are bound to make mistakes or decisions that aren't fully informed.

Mindfully look back at past projects—in our case, the previous volume—and work out what is working and what isn't, and let this help directly inform new work.

From volume 1 to volume 2 we learnt that it is best to a) Choose a printer that you admire b) Sit down and discuss your concerns and ambitions for the printed reproductions.”
