Claire Hartley created this booklet as a design artifact representing Amy Martin and Dan Whithouse’s inquiries into creative work with young people. The booklet uses a handmade alphabet, unique designs for each spread, and a Singer-sewn spine to accentuate key areas from the research on young peoples’ creative work outside of school.

Project Description

Arts Connect is an Arts Council bridging organisation for the West Midlands. This project was a partnership between independent producer Amy Martin and Dan Whitehouse (Mac Birmingham) investigating creative work with young people. The printed resource is a result of their findings, highlighting key areas across arts and culture outside school.

I created a handmade alphabet made with Indian inks and produced illustrative elements to narrate the copy. The spine was Singer sewn and the book was printed black with Pantone 805U.

Production Lesson(s)

The title font was handmade using Indian inks and I wanted to keep this watercolour effect using a spot colour. By splitting the scanned ink words into 10 colour vectors I was able to use a variety of tints of the Pantone to create the desired effect.”
