Lead Image

These invitations to an MFA graduate design show blends elements of the current “so bad it’s good” and “crack the code” design trends. Playful elements—like the “handwritten” notes and the 3 in 2013 turned into a butt—bring levity to a piece which is otherwise highly structured and meticulously executed.

Project Description

In creating an identity design for the 2013 UTS Visual Communications Grad Show, we wanted to portray the fun, youthful and dedicated personalities of this year’s graduates, particularly with reference to the idea of “working our butts off” and their “exposure” to the industry. Using a series of visual and verbal puns, a mark and identity was established across a variety of collateral including invitations, screen printed posters and gallery murals.

Invitations were letterpressed at The Distillery with a fluoro ink gradient of PMS 805 to 806 with and an overprint with Reflex Blue. Designed by Olivia King and Sebastian Andreassen, with art direction from Michelle Catanzaro.

Production Lesson(s)

Creating a clean fluoro gradient over a large run of prints presented a difficult challenge for the production team. However through combination of skip feeding, a split-fountain and a mid-run wash of the press, we were able to keep the colours vibrant and consistent across all invites.”
