It’s fun to see how designers utilize production tricks when designing for themselves—other opportunities can be few and far between. When redesigning business cards for her Silver Lining Design studio, Trish Leavitt seized the chance to work with blind debossing to create a textured pattern. As a result, these business cards make an engaging connection to the clouds referred to in the studio’s name.

Project Description

I've always loved the tactile quality of letterpress, and redesigning my business cards was the perfect opportunity to incorporate the technique.

The studio is called Silver Lining Design, and I wanted the cards to be tasteful and elegant. Instead of printing metallic silver ink for the two different pattern motifs, a blind deboss is less expected and shows off the stunning, handcrafted artisanship of the letterpress printer.

Production Lesson(s)

Collaborating with the printer was essential and beneficial: his "show + tell" of other printed samples helped me determine how to best utilize the blind deboss for the patterns. ”
