Project Description

Caeley & Jonathan met in Singapore, but originated from California and South Africa respectively. I fell in love with their international love story and wanted to incorporate it into their wedding invitation. "Fly Away With Us" became the clear theme seeing that most of their guests would need to travel to attend their wedding. The idea of travel was applied to every part of the wedding stationery from the invitation itself to the postage.

The design is extremely simple and uses Halo Handletter and Mrs Eaves. Halo Handletter is not my favorite script because it requires a lot of customization in the kerning, but when kerned properly it can really work. I illustrated a silhouette of a plane with heart trail as a subtle way to tie in the travel theme.

The invitation was letterpressed with a fairly deep impression on a bright white French cotton paper. As always, I wanted to make sure the pressing was done properly, so I rented a Vandercook machine and pressed every piece myself. The single piece, one color invitation was a good choice for the couple because they were on a tight budget. Tight budgets don't mean you can't have something beautiful, and Caeley & Jonathan proved that.

Production Lesson(s)

Halo Handletter was not a typeface I would have chosen, but it was the script that my client requested. It requires a lot of adjustments in the kerning and because of this I would not use this typeface in the future, nor would I recommend it to another designer.
