On the Jewish holiday Purim it is traditional to give reciprocal gifts of food and drink. Hillel Smith added an extra personal touch to these Purim treat baskets by cutting custom lettering out of each Chinese-food-take-out-style box.

Project Description

Happy Purim! It's customary to give gifts of food to friends, called mishloach manot in Hebrew. People often theme their baskets' contents (garden party, beer and nuts, under the sea, etc.) but as we designers know, it's what's on the outside that counts. I designed my own boxes this year using leftover paper from another client project and cut them with a desktop cutting machine. Each is cut from a single sheet of letter-size card and folded, using no adhesives of any kind—it's just paper. Inside is a small assortment of goodies, wrapped in a small rectangle of tissue paper. The type is custom done. Sad news for you: I already ate all the hamentashen.

Production Lesson(s)

When cutting complex shapes with desktop cutting machines, reverse the design before cutting so the side facing the viewer has cleaner edges.”
