Inspired by the hand-work of his grandfathers, Jeff Holmberg’s re-purposed wood posters express simple reminders with undeniable Midwestern charm.
The idea behind the content explores our daily need for perspective, exploring contentment and who we become in encouraging others. I’ve always been intrigued by the unseen / seen relationship that exists around us. Seeds sprouting from dirt into sky making fruit/shade/shelter that did not exist before. Similarly, ideas in our minds, exist with potential to sprout into time and space, becoming tangible and real in the lives of others, encouraging, protecting, and sustaining; changing their day. Something important happens when we surprise others from out of nowhere with an unexpected drink, note, or expression.
Challenges in this project came from working with unsettled wood. Some additional warping and cracking happened after project was completed. This actually added value as the cupped face and cracks through the design added a great look. I learned that steel bracing on the back of the sign would probably be needed to keep the sign face flat and that reclaimed wood has a bit of an unknown over time.
