One of the biggest problems I see in the world today is the loss of the Fantastic. Age is met with the idea that we must cleave our younger-self in order to become an adult. I would argue the opposite. Instead of shedding limitations, we go through life with the insatiable urge to just be a kid again. In the best way possible, Stefan Bucher’s 12 Bigger Monsters Portfolio reminds me of a young mind brimming with imagination. Takes you to a different world.
12 Bigger Monsters is a limited edition portfolio of a dozen larger than usual Daily Monster drawings. I created these Monsters especially and exclusively for this portfolio. After hundreds of letter-sized characters I thought it would be nice to go a bit bigger. Dramatic scale! Fine detail! The works!
It’s taken me 16 months to select the 12 Monsters that comprise this collection. In that time I made tons of large drawings. Many of them were nice, but didn’t quite measure up. I wanted every one of these Monsters to be great, and I wanted them to come in the fanciest possible containment unit. No expense was spared.
Things I learned During Production:
1. They don’t make gradient book cloth, so don’t ask your binder to “Make it look like an Arnold Palmer.”
2. Dupioni silk looks much cooler than an Arnold Palmer.
3. Dupioni silk is fucking expensive!
4. Dupioni silk isn’t what you’d call industrial strength fabric.
5. Magnets are a much cooler way to keep a portfolio closed than some foncy bit of ribbon. I’m not a kitten.
6. Accurately reproducing the color of Canson paper is difficult.
7. Reproducing the color of Canson paper consistently is impossible.
8. Stripping the Canson paper background out of a drawing without obliterating the light pencil lines takes many, many hours.
9. Embossing your seal on something automatically makes it better.
10. Signing 1,200 sheets takes much longer than you’d think.
