Winter time designs are upon us, featuring snow, pine trees, snowflakes, deer, and whatnot. For the most part these all end up as trite, boring postcards that you buy at Walgreens as they sit next to packs of Trident gum. Making the most of these visual cues is Bureau of Betterment’s amazingly detailed, and fuzzingly produced “Like a Glove” poster that features a very unique production method, flocking.
The idea of doing a nordic knitted story about love-struck moose, fuzzy creatures and a house in the woods had been rambling in my head for a while. When I finally got a block of free time, I went at it, and decided it would be a good promo piece and client thank you that would highlight both my creativity and attention to detail. The cost was a bit high, so I’m also selling some posters to offset production expenses.
Flocking is a very niche market (one that is mostly done overseas), so it took about 3 weeks to even find a vendor in the USA, which was my goal from the start. Finding the right tolerances for the very precise design was a shot in the dark, but after looking at various flocking samples I was hopeful that the final would represent my computer file — and it did! Also, once I got the posters I realized that flocking has quite a bit of grip compared to regular posters that made them tough to get out of the mailing tubes I had bought. So I inserted a slip sheet when rolling the posters and a small note inside the mailing tube about how to deal with kinetic friction.
While the design itself is a thing to reckon with, the actual poster is amazing. The fuzzy flocking literally feels as a dusting of snow on the ground and makes for very tactile product. As if the flocking wasn’t enough, the poster also has glitter, to give it that little extra holiday cheer.
