We don’t often think of Halloween as an opportunity to give, it’s all about getting the candy—bell-ringing as a kid, or raiding the kids buckets at night. But the folks at HAWSE in Charlotte have come up with a Halloween tradition-in-the-making that monster-stomps the candy in favor of a good time with new and old friends bonding over pumpkin carving.
We at HAWSE design put on a Charlotte, NC creative community pumpkin carving event every year. The entire event benefits the Levine Children’s Hospital. The posters are given to the creatives that register for the event as part of their entry fee and are sold locally online and at the event.
The concept this year was that “it’s what’s inside that counts.” Encouraging creatives to take the challenge and compete as well as celebrate the Children at the Hospital battling life threatening illness everyday. The can was used as this year’s element on the poster as well as actual custom-labeled cans of pumpkin were sent out as invitations to get people to enter. The background illustrations on the poster (in the orange field) each represent a different design discipline’s interpretation of a pumpkin.
Work with good people. Dan at Vahalla was making suggestions throughout to really make colors pop, help with registration, etc. With a tight turn and an out of town vendor, this trust and back and forth was key.
So next time you sneak that midnight chocolate bar out of its hiding spot, think about what you could be doing next Halloween.
