Love projects take a while to come to life. When two editors decided to create a new magazine together they took their time in gathering the materials, working on the design and getting it produced. They, of course, wanted to make it perfect.
Both editors of The Gopher have worked in the magazine world for some time, and we decided to create an arts and culture magazine that did away with the idea of disposable periodicals. It was an idea that started taking shape quickly, and with virtually no budget, we worked on a video explaining the project and launched our website, and began posting material, and planning the print magazine. In December 2009 we launched a Kickstarter campaign and were able to get some funds to print the magazine. It took quite a while to create the final product, and our supporters were incredibly understanding and patient.
We decided to feature long-form journalism, chronicle and literature as well as the visual arts portfolios of four talents for every issue. The idea is to create an object that is meticulously curated, written and designed and that is customizable by the reader. It took us and the immensely talented designer Alex Wright [MODO] about a year to translate that idea into the magazine. For us, it was very important not to rush into print, and to create a magazine that was faithful to our original idea. In this first issue, we’re very lucky to feature work by Jessica Hische, Mike Cina, Billy Ben and many other amazing folk.
Right now we’re working on Issues #2 and #3, reading submissions and coming up with theme ideas. We’ve also opened an online shop where we’ve made the magazine available.
Judging by the first volume, my guess is that subsequent volumes will take their sweet time to become available, but the wait will be worth it.
