When something is truly unique, one-of-a-kind and special to the heart, then there is reason to celebrate and share. When Greg Guenther designed his latest table, he wanted to chronicle and share the process and success with all of those involved.

I received the project while teaching at the Savannah College of Art and Design. One of my colleagues in the furniture department, Jason Wech, was a craftsman on the coffee table project. He introduced me to the wood shop’s owner and master craftsman, Greg Guenther, who was interested in a collateral piece to showcase the labor-intensive, pain-staking passion that went into the table. Guenther had hoped to give a copy of the book to everyone involved: the owners, the designers, the builders, the craftsmen, and the guys operating the crane who hoisted a half-ton, virgin-timber coffee table up three stories. Today, Guenther uses the coffee-table book to promote his gift for creating and restoring exceptional furniture.

Honoring the tactile and dimensional aspects of furniture design, the design of the book was carefully considered.

We French-folded and perfect-bound the piece, which gave a nice heft to what would have been a fairly-thin book. Because the paper is so thick, especially after the French folds, we made sure to score the books a half inch from the binding for ease of opening and reading.

The book uses Neenah’s EAMES™ painting collection. The cover is Brown Umber Double Thick Canvas finish 120 lb cover. The interior is White canvas finish 80# cover. It prints like a dream, and gives incredible texture to the images.

From looking at the pages, I can see the process of making the table was a special endeavor that involved friends and colleagues. From looking at these pages, I can assume friendships and relationships grew like the tree now grows in the center of the project. Now they all share a special chronicle of the journey that is beautifully done, just like their work. It’s also nice to see a very polished digital printing piece like this.
