If you follow Friends of Type — please, do if you don’t — these posters will come as no surprise, since they consistently show amazing hand-crafted and computer-crafted lettering, whether it’s their own sketches and final renderings or those of their friends. While all this goodness lives on screen, the itch to translate that into the tangible world of print was probably inevitable:
We started Friends of Type as a place to throw our sketches and push each other to do things that we love. One of the things we love is printed matter and, as luck would have it, Jason Wong is also half of enormous champion where his wife Jordan is an expert printer. While 950 pixels is a good format for a blog, we yearned for 8 × 10-inch output. We combined a few posts and phrases that had come up in the blog and each took a word from “Always Play Amongst Friends” to create a series that works well together as well as in separate.
With Jordan as a vested interest — you could say profit sharing, if indeed there is profit — we could actually afford the project, mixing passion and business in a way that was fun, if a bit dangerous. This also made the series accessibly priced for people just as passionate as we are about collecting letters on paper. We hope those people like the prints as much as we do!
