Once in a blue moon the stars and planets align in such a way that a given project turns into an unforgettable experience. One that pushes and teaches the people involved through tears and sweat, long nights and head to wall pounding.
This project came to fruit only because of a great client, a crazy designer and a very willing printer. The client’s clothing label is a new startup and he’s vision was to impress fashion buyers in Europe. He kept pushing us (the designer and the printer) to propose all kinds of finishings to him and he inspired us with his fashion vernacular and the kinds of finishings, textures available to him when purchasing leathers and materials. He was a very tough client to please but now, I have learnt to appreciate him as one of the best clients I have.
Technically, this project is very feasible and not difficult to replicate but in Singapore, there is not more than four printers who would be willing to accept this project or would be able to achieve it. I believe the printer had absorbed about 20% of the actual production costs to match the client’s budget and even had to hire a part-timer for a day to spray paint all the booklets. I’m very thankful for this opportunity and I just hope he’s venture works out and we get to do another crazy lookbook this year.
Taking risks when working out of our comfort zone, and with materials and situations we are not familiar with can be tricky. Such as reversing the binding so that it is exposed and open to a blast of black spray paint coming from all sides. But more often than not, the results exceed our expectations and leave us satisfied with the experience and willing to try something else.
