In the past few months we have seen a lot of portfolio books here at UnderConsideration as we wrap up a book on the subject — the variations among them are countless, yet a solution we hadn’t seen was put together by Brian Neumann. Brian chose the unconventional road of producing more than one copy of his portfolio, turning it into a promotional mailer more than a traditional, one-off display of work. This also affected how it is presented, as he mails it to potential clients and employers versus the traditional interview.
The pros have been great recognition (in Denver) with some freelance work coming from my blog exposure as well as a lot of networking meetings. The cons would be that the cost is a bit high, production time was longer than anticipated and in the end I look very much like a niche print designer (which can be good and bad).
The exploration of techniques was partly for my own edification. But the main intent was to show that I could take a concept and branding direction and fuse together a wide variety of available processes and put them together in a cohesive end product. It showcases some unique production which gives the project a very crafted feel, and provides the recipient with something that feels unique, special and gives them ideas for how they might use those techniques in a project that I would hopefully do for them.
A kit of many parts and a display of many techniques this promotional portfolio is more cohesive in view than it is as specs on paper. Sure to call attention to its creator, it is perhaps in time that the investment will be recuperated and every costly detail shall be worth the effort.
