Mark Owens is a designer, writer, and curator who has served as Design Director at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, MN, since 2022, where he leads the Walker’s legendary in-house design studio. At the Walker, the studio is responsible for exhibition identities, publications, out-of-home advertising, a quarterly magazine, campus wayfinding, and the long-running Insights Design Lecture Series while also overseeing walkerart.org and the Walker brand. As an independent designer, Mark has worked for clients across the cultural realm, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, ICA Miami, ICA Philadelphia, and Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions, creating books, exhibitions, apparel, web, and motion graphics. His influential writing on design, music, and material culture has been published in the pages of Dot Dot Dot, PIN-UP, Bricks From the Kiln, and Experimental Jetset’s Statement and Counter-Statement, among others. He co-edited, with Zak Kyes, the catalogue for the exhibition Forms of Inquiry at the Architectural Association, London, and has served as visiting faculty at Yale, CalArts, and the University of Pennsylvania, and as guest curator in the School of Art and Design at Purchase College, SUNY. He holds an MFA in graphic design from Yale University and an MA in English from Duke University.
