In Brief: Out with the chin, in with the hair

The Tonight Show with Conan O'brien

On June 1st, The Giant Hair takes over for The Giant Chin as The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien goes live on NBC. For its new logo, Conan explained his motives: “I wanted a logo that acknowledged the long, rich tradition of The Tonight Show while still looking good on hats, T-shirts, mugs, lawn furniture, notebooks, stemware, urns, defibrillators, water bottles, cell phones, sports equipment, pens, vacuums, chimes and our new line of unisex cologne.” Yes, but can you embroider it?

Thanks to Dave Zibell for the tip.

In Brief: The Most Benevolently Evil Corporation Ever

Veridian Dynamics Logo

Veridian Dynamics began in 1842 as a neighborhood general store specializing in tobacco, killing machines and party favors. With 532,972½ employees, their glorious history has been built upon two fundamentals: pioneering products that make lives better and leading the world in weapons technology. Watch one of their commercials to learn about how they’re making your life better. Usually.

In Brief: So Very In Brief

Verizon April Fools

Thank you to all of our delightful April Fools’ fools and non-fools yesterday for making it a great branding prank day. From the comments it seems like it was a 1-in-5 fooling ratio, maybe. In case you are curious about what went on in this, here is a brief overview.

In Brief: Landor Uncredits itself for Naming

Landor and Syfy

Landor has posted an entry on their blog gently letting people know that they were not responsible for renaming the SciFi Channel to Syfy after The New York Times credited them for it. Given the amount of negative reaction against the name I think it’s pretty fair for Landor to offer their official stance. It’s rare that a large branding firm can go on the record after the fact, so this is an interesting turn of events.

In Brief: Like the Hulk, but Bluer

Big Lex

In 2010, the city of Lexington, Kentucky will host the first ever World Equestrian Games, and it expects an expanded new wave of visitors. The Lexington Convention and Visitors Bureau tapped Pentagram for a new city identity and DJ Stout, working with Michael Bierut, gave Lexington a new, big, mythical blue horse: “Big Lex.” Regardless of what you think of this eccentric identity, one thing is for sure… it will fax like nobody’s business.

In Brief: Best Tire Branding. Ever.

Apollo Tires

Saffron Consultants has redesigned the identity for India-based Apollo, a maker of tires (or tyres, per the British spelling). While the tire industry may not be known for its cutting edge corporate or brand identity Saffron has introduced a serious amount of coolness to it. You can see their old logo at Apollo’s web site, or in this pop-up image.

In Brief: Word It, Our Newest Blog

Word It

The price to pay for fresh identity content served almost daily is being subjected to some cross self-promotion from the UnderConsideration mini universe. Our new spin-off blog from Speak Up — don’t forget Brand New was once a Speak Up spin-off! — is the six-year-old featurette of Word It. More than 4,400 submissions have been relocated to the new blog and tagged with more than 2,500 keywords — perhaps you would like to start with the “logo” tag or “speech bubble” tag (samples shown in header image). Enjoy

In Brief: Now on Twitter

Twitter

In the past few weeks we have received numerous inquiries about whether we had a Twitter account which, prior to these, was something we hadn’t even considered, but seeing that Twitter is the hot thing right now, we would be remiss to not be part of it. What we decided makes the most sense is to have a Twitter not just for Brand New but for all of UnderConsideration, including the other blogs as well as our forays into client-driven work or publishing. The goal is to provide some insight about what goes on at UC headquarters — basically whatever me and Bryony are up to — and share what we are working on and doing. Of course, for all you dear tipsters, feel free to Tweet us! You can find us @ucllc.
