Generally, Friday Likes are of smaller scale projects in terms of client size and overall deployment needs, which makes sense as that’s where there is usually more room for out of the ordinary solutions. Today I have three bigger-ish projects that may not be as quirky or design-ey but they still have a lot to like.
This edition is inspired by the arrival of the 2011 Brand New Awards book on American soil from its printing in China. It’s still a few days before arrival at UCllc headquarters but it’s coming. It’s really coming, people! (We were slow on our end, which is why the book wasn’t ready in August like last year). Proof is in the first picture below (or after the jump); dig the laser-cut cover. Anyway: three winners from the book are liked this Friday.
It’s been a few weeks since I last did this and it’s back with a bang. Two superb eye candy pieces sandwich a more conservative piece with work from Russia, Canada, and the USofA.
Today’s Likes are all fake, not real, speculative, just-for-the-heck-of-it projects. Some designers question why other designers do this: Wouldn’t the time and energy be better spent designing something probono for a nonprofit? Yes, probably. But how else is one going to satisfy the longing for designing for our dream clients? I love fake design projects: They are the equivalent of hitting the gym and lifting weights to get stronger, leaner, meaner — it may not always be pretty, but eventually leads to results.
A sandwich of restaurants with a delicious tennis feeling in this edition of Friday Links.
No real home runs, hat tricks, or 360 slam dunks this week. Just a few quirky and unexpected projects: New Ukrainian kids television channel, Italian food packaging in Australia, and military vehicle museum in Moscow.
Two thirds of today’s Likes have an Austin connection, which I point out only because I need to fill at least two lines of text in my Friday Likes intros. The other third has to do with Chicago. So there.
After doing Friday Likes for 12 weeks now, I am amazed at how much international work I end up choosing. It’s not even on purpose. Today we have kids toys from Russia, on-air type stylings from Italy via Argentina, and spicy delights from Mexico.
We have a pretty eclectic collection today with brands for history nerds, baby nerds, and nerd nerds.
This week, quite serendipitously, all three Likes are about the number 7. Perhaps not all as drool-inducing as past Friday Likes but I couldn’t resist the hepta trifecta.
