Word It for January
After more than six years, more than 4,500 submissions, and more than 5,000 tags through 75 different words, the time to bring Word It to an end has come. This is not a decision that comes lightly for us, and we realize that we are removing an outlet of creativity for all the participants over the years, but we hope that the encouragement that Word It brought in staying creatively alert is something you can all continue on your own. We feel we have all jointly taken Word It as far as it can go and we have a hard time picturing its next evolution, so as we planned our efforts for 2010 a few months ago, we felt that our limited resources — as Word It requires daily and thorough maintenance — would be put to best use in other UnderConsideration ventures. Your time, creativity and support over the years has fueled Word It and we profusely thank you for it. The End is the word for January. |

I'm the creator of another word challenge site called Quadrivial Quandary. Each day the site shows four words and you have to illustrate their meanings by using them all together in one sentence. In my site you "illustrate" words with other words, as opposed to Word-It where you illustrate a word with an image. I discovered Word-It just last month and am sorry to hear the news that it's shutting down. I'm a web developer and would like to help carry the Word-It idea forward -- either in its current form or as a separate project. (One idea I have for a sequel is to focus exclusively on SVG images.) I'd welcome comments from the Word-It founders or any participants who would like to keep this challenge -- or something like it -- alive on the web. Rudi Seitz On Jan.12.2010 at 05:03 PM

Fellow WordIt fans, I'm setting up a new site called PictorialMatter to keep a monthly word illustration challenge going on the web. I've been in touch with the WordIt founders, who let me know that their decision to close WordIt is final. But, they kindly gave me the go ahead to start up a similar challenge at a new home. You won't find much at PictorialMatter just yet, but please visit, bookmark it, and leave a comment. I hope you'll help me shape the new site. Rudi Seitz On Jan.22.2010 at 03:50 PM

Discussing, and looking for, what is relevant in, and the relevance of, graphic design. Displaying opinions, and focusing solely, on corporate and brand identity work. Corralling the most relevant and creative on- and off-line bits that pertain to the design community – and said community is openly invited and encouraged to add their hard-earned links. Celebrating the reality that print is not dead by showcasing the most compelling printed projects. Describing, tracking and explaining culture, commerce, politics, media, sports, brands — everything possible, really — through design. Designing corporate and brand identities and full development of printed and digital matter for clients and us. |
