2 Rebels Speaks Up

Smoked Meat, freezing winters, the vibrant Rue de St. Laurent, and 2 Rebels; a few of the things Montreal is known for. In a city so rich with culture, it is surprising that Montreal’s increasing reputation for type hasn’t hit the international scene sooner. For the past decade, 2 Rebels have been one of the brick-layers of the city’s contemporary type design. Speak Up was able to take time with co-founder Denis Dulude to see what was in his space.

Armin’s comment is:

I wish he had ellaborated his answers a bit more.

>I do approach font design differently today. Strangely in a more static way.

Isn't typeface design a static activity? And I'm not talking about movement like on a script typeface. Typeface design is inherently a static facet of design. Type doesn't move.

>SU: After 15 years as an international ballet dancer, the leap towards type and design would be one that is fairly uncommon, what was the catalyst for this?

>>DD: Simply a new passion for graphic design.

Did Denis have any background on design before? because going from Ballet to Design is VERY uncommon, and to be only fueled by passion, I would guess there would be something else.

>now I think it's "Flembo text" and I don't know why!

'Cause it's a great typeface.

Armin, type doesn't move, *yet*...

I also thought the answers were a bit short, but what kinda "historically" bothers me more is the "originality" (shall we tactfully say) of their earlier work.

definitely a stumbling block for those of us concerned with functionality, Hrant. in fact, I find clicking through their catalog tiresome and largely unproductive for this very reason.

Good Interview. Just wanted to represent from Montréal!!!! I'd also like to reiterate what Denis said about Montréal being a mix of North American and European culture. It is intrinsic to the city and is probably what makes it so interesting, along with its enormous student population. In terms of design, there is some great stuff being done here, no "big" names, but the sheer amount of fly-posting makes for some really interesting posters.

check out the work of Orange Tango (wish they would get their site online) and the amazing "grunge" concert posters by Serigraphie Populaire.

A mix of North American and European? Wow.

Man, I'd love to go to HK, ASAP.

BTW, I thought the longest escalator was the one in Barcelona (leading up to Park Guell, from the West).

Kevin’s comment is:

You're probably right, the escalator in Hk is actually not THE longest as it is really a series of escalators. But it is the longest SERIES of escalators conecting the upper city to the downtown. You can get off at different stages. Still pretty cool though.

I have photos of that puppy. but it too is a series of escalators - still fun to ride though.

There's an other teacher at UQAM design school who was a international ballet dancer. His name is Alfred Halasa from Poland. Mostly done posters...
