Here is a link to Niklaus Troxler’s poster promoting Switzerland’s entry into the United Nations* today as the 190th member. It is truly a work of art.
*Correction: Troxler’s poster was to encourage Switzerland to enter the EU, not the UN.

what is up with graphic designers slavishly using JPEG?
Graphic designers are much more familiar with jpeg's than gif's.
.eps, .jpg, .tif or .psd, that's all we know. When the web came around, that was the first time we ever saw a gif, and it was pretty freaky. And don't get me started with .png, I'm glad that never caught on.
It took me a while to understand the difference between gif's and jpeg's, but thankfully I caught on.
On Sep.10.2002 at 06:36 PMSwitzerland joined the United Nations, not the European Union. I guess the US could use watches, chocolate, and Swiss Army knives when they invade Iraq? What a frightful thought.
On Sep.10.2002 at 08:45 PMThe reason I asked is the color scheme Troxler is using - very misleading. The UN colors are blue and white - the EU colors are blue and gold.
BTW, Saddaam could avert an attack with a very easy trick: rename the country iRaq. No American president would dare bomb it.

On Sep.10.2002 at 08:56 PMYou are correct sir! You'd think as a graphic designer I would know the slight difference in color between the UN and the EU.Troxler's poster was to encourage Switzerland to enter the
EU, not the UN. I apologize for the misinformation. Beautiful none the less.
iRaq, that's clever.
On Sep.10.2002 at 09:44 PMWhile there is something to be said for simplicity, I don' think this poster really communicates the message well enough. I mean, all the confusion in this thread about what was going on underlines that point. Neverless, good work on that site. I found this one more pleasing, though, again, wrecked by jpeg compression:

Well, not really. Without Kiran's UN confusion I would have totally understood the meaning right off. On the other hand, I can see how a 'Murican would think it was a poster about giving proper medical attention to the Lakers.
> wrecked by jpeg compression
That's not half of it. From the edge artefacts it looks like it used to be a GIF (or some other palette-based format, as opposed to a "high-color" format), they sized it down (by a non-integer proportion), and *then* they saved it out as a JPEG. Wonderful.

Hrant, you could be on a game show where the challenge is "guess how many times this image has been optimized".
On Sep.14.2002 at 04:37 PMThe original link to the poster in question (encouraging Switzerland to join the EU) seems to be bad but only four colors and lots of horizontal repetition make it almost ideal for the lossless LZW compression of the .gif format.

I don't get it: did Switzerland join the UN, or the European Union?...
(In any case, I should just be happy they didn't join NATO.)
BTW, what is up with graphic designers slavishly using JPEG when GIF would do so much better?
