Different Worlds, Shared Typography

Our past opposites have, admittedly, shared more in common than in contrast in terms of career trajectories, types of clients and range of projects: Sam and Martin had both done plenty of work in editorial and entertainment world to find common ground, while Post Typography and Ed Fella shared uncanny abilities to meddle with type. In this case, Dana and Carin stand at broad opposites of the kind of careers, clients and projects that a designer can grow into.

After an initial stint with CBS Television, CBS Records and Atlantic Records Carin established her own firm in 1982 through which she has designed book covers, books, identities, posters and more, and, other than a brief position as the Creative Director at Time Inc. Custom Publishing, she has been an independent designer, usually with an assistant, developing the bulk of the work herself. Meanwhile, Dana has been a partner at VSA Partners since 1985, overseeing a design firm that at some point has had more than one hundred employees so, naturally, his role is more of a shepherd of good design and making sure that the work of VSA’s talented designers makes it through the grueling process that typically defines the work for big-name clients.

Whether it’s a logo for one of the largest mobile phone providers, or the identity for a small bakery, the annual report for one of the most influential technology companies, or a booklet for one of the most influential design firms, these two designers find common ground in the use of outstanding typography, imagery and language — we will share some of these examples in the coming days as we approach our third event.
