This annual report was designed and produced to grab readers’ attention and entice potential donors, as well as thank previous donors and hopefully make them want to donate again. The concept pulls from the foundation’s history with the railroad and employs nifty design tricks—various page sizes and an interactive railroad track tab to name a few—to keep readers engaged.

Project Description

The project was to concept and design the annual report for the George M. Pullman Educational Foundation in Chicago. The foundation is endowed by the estate of railroad magnate George Pullman and awards high school students with merit-based, need-based scholarships and continuing educational support. Since railroads have been such a big part of the foundation's history we took that into consideration when designing and concepting the annual. The annual report was sent out to potential and past donors and since receiving donations is a huge goal, we wanted people to remember the annual from the minute they received it. This is why we created a cover that the person viewing has to interact with by pulling the railroad track tab and revealing the cover underneath. We also introduced various page sizes throughout to keep the viewers attention.

Production Lesson(s)

This annual report was slightly more complicated than your average annual because of the perforated strip on the cover and the mini pages within the main body. One thing we learned was to contact a printer and start working with them as soon as possible even though the design may not be 100% final. Our printer was great and helped us work through a lot of the technical issues as we went saving us a headache in the end.”
