In 2012 Canada decided to start phasing out the penny from their coinage system due to excessive and rising cost of production relative to face value. These boxes—with cleverly placed iconic maple leaves, like the ones depicted in the penny, exiting the frame—were designed for collectors coins, which were released to commemorate the soon to be extinct one cent piece.

Project Description

The Royal Canadian Mint created several collector coins to commemorate the elimination of the Canadian 1-cent coin and needed a set of packaging to tie them all together. The emblematic maple leaves that have adorned the penny for over 50 years are shown exiting the frame each of the boxes and are beautifully embossed and foil stamped. We created the “Farewell” theme and differentiated the boxes with different colored foils that represent the color of the coins within each box.

Production Lesson(s)

The production phase of the project was very well managed by the mint and their printer. Anderson Communications, the firm responsible for managing the printing, arranged an incredible multi-level emboss of the maple leaves that are on the front of each box. They beautifully match the detail found on the actual coins. ”
