As you can see, we have completely redesigned FPO. When we first launched in 2009 the design of the site was “fine” but nothing spectacular and for the past few months I had grown weary of its look and basic blog format. So it was time for a change.
Look
The previous design felt a little subdued, boring, and understated so we wanted to liven things up a little. We ditched the blues and light grays in exchange for dark grays and yellow. We changed Times and Courier for Avenir and Sisserif served as webfonts. We came up with a new logo that is meant to allude to the positioning and patterning of a print screen. Overall, we just wanted something more punchy.
Big Images
Hard for anyone to disagree with us here: we wanted bigger images. So they are bigger. Boom goes the 800-pixel-wide image!
Submission Process
After three years of receiving images and prepping posts in Movable Type we have revised our online submission form to make it more thorough so as to present the best information and easier for us to capture the information. Also, we were often asked “How do I submit to FPO?” so we placed a big, fat dot next to the logo to make it abundantly clear.
Ask the Experts
This is one of the features we are most excited about for the new version. We have assembled a group of willing experts to answer reader questions. There is little in the way of “troubleshooting” or more in-depth information about printing so we hope to create a useful resource. See more here and ask away.
Inker Linker Cross-Pollination
We talked to Jessica Hische about having some kind of mutual benefit between FPO and her amazing resource at Inker Linker, so whenever one of the projects featured on FPO has a profile on Inker Linker you will see a badge with a link to it. On Inker Linker, printers with work featured here will have a thumbnail leading back to FPO. Win-win-win (for FPO, for Inker Linker, and for you).
Etc.
We are also planning on adding videos in the posts when possible so that you can get a better sense of the dimensionality or pace of a project — still have to test it out. In general, we are just hoping for a better experience on the site for everyone involved.
