There are many ways to pay homage to one’s travels. The obligatory photo album, the traveler’s journal, videos, postcards, souvenirs (all of which have ostensibly become obsolete with the development of the digital camera…and now the iPhone). This project by Christina Piluso is much more than a snapshot or kitschy figurine. It’s a catalog and memoir of her journey through Asia with her sister. Beautifully crafted, this piece speaks not only of the brilliance of their voyage, but of their friendship.
My sister launched a 7-month trip throughout Asia, and with it she kept a travel blog. She’s an incredible writer, and I wanted to have the trip live in a tangible way for her even when she came home and inevitably ditched the blog. (Or changed the subject matter.) Throughout the months she was gone, as she published blog posts, I would get online and pull all the content and lay it out into the book. Eventually it became two books because it was getting so big. When she returned home, her boyfriend sneakily swiped her original, hi res photos and uploaded them to my ftp site - all 13GB. It was a great way to keep on top of her travels and a really valuable design project for me as well. I’ve never worked on anything this extensive and it was also an interesting challenge to keep the book elegant and minimally designed so as to let the writing and photography be the true focus. Overall, everyone is really happy with the outcome.
The biggest challenge that presented itself was discovered after I had sent the pages off to the bindery. I didn’t realize that the registration from front to back was incredibly off. When the books were trimmed, some of the inner pages ended up with white borders even though there was plenty of bleed. Luckily I just printed new pages out on a different printer and the bindery was able to salvage the covers and re-bind a couple of the books. I wouldn’t have previously thought to double check the registration when printing double-sided.
