It took me a while to develop the concept thoroughly. My initial approach was to express the eclecticism of typography, that is, how universal type is. Even though you may not be able to understand a language or read its words, one can still depict letters and typography of different alphabets. After much revision, I settled on portraying this eclecticism using the “I Spy” children’s books. In the books, the pages are flooded with a crystallographic assortment of random objects in which one has to search and find specific objects.
So, I decided that by using negative space and filling positive space with the attributes and shapes of letterforms, I could portray my wordmark and theme for the 2011 TypeCon, then titling the theme as ” I SPY”.
