Thanks to Juan Carlos Hernández Cámara for the tip, who has a nice rundown (in Spanish) of each finalist.

Sigh. I'm not even going to follow the link to look at the quote unquote finalists.
People are such fools.

I like your cropping of that logo...
On the link to the pool of logos, there was a script version that I found particularly compelling. At least miles ahead of the finalists...

Keep looking classy Mexico...
Number 4 is almost there, but it makes me imagine two horribly disfigured people kissing.
Number 1 looks like a Coca-Cola circa 1997 abortion.
Number 2 looks like an amateur church logo.
and Number 3, well – the 80's called and they want their lips back.
This is pretty much a perfect example of why spec work is just wrong for anything worthwhile, haha one was even taken down due to copyright!
They could of done better hiring someone even for MX$500,000, oy.
On Dec.02.2008 at 08:51 AMrickyaustin’s comment is:
Wow. Someone is gonna make $73000 USD out of one of those marks.
Every designer except one will walk away empty handed, and the client got subpar work.
I guess that's why Spec doesn't Work?
On Dec.02.2008 at 10:04 AMChaac’s comment is:
Actually I think all finalists are making money. Around 2,000 USD if I'm not mistaken.
This was a train wreck, really. The imposed strategy, the brief, the logistic of the contest, the jury, the results, the government present attitude towards this... it is regretful.
I am really sorry this looks as if it was representing Mexican Design. It only represents Mexican government though. So, on behalf of my rather beautiful country: We do have good taste, it is just that our politics doesn't.
As a recommendation, you have to be logged in onto a Flickr account to see the more than 300 proposals. SOME of them are worth seeing, a lot more than the "finalists".
Thank you for posting this in Brand New.
Sincerely, Juan Carlos Hernandez Camara, A.K.A. Chaac

Armin, I really wish that you'd noted that the "pretty fabulous" example on Flickr was not safe for work...
On Dec.02.2008 at 12:51 PMAntonio Serrano’s comment is:
I agree with everything Chaac said. This is just wrong. I had hoped that the international design blogsphere would miss this awful chapter in Mexican design (following our "lovely" postal service fiasco), but I guess connectivity has its price.
On the up-side, I believe some people are having things done so that the contest is declared void and a new deadline and jury be established. Good luck to them, and to us.

The logo that was pulled was one with a still-visible iStockphoto watermark. Classy indeed.
Anyone that's dying to see it can go here.

What, people don't moon where you work? : )
Noted. And fixed.
On Dec.02.2008 at 01:33 PMKarla’s comment is:
It's a shame, the contest, the finalists, and the jury... Many people entered this contest and feel robbed since there was so good work and it looks like the jury chose the worse "logos" if they can be called like that...
Many contestants had uploaded their proposals in contrast with the official finalists:

I don't mean to detract from the focus on the recklessness of spec work (of which I whole heartedly agree)...
but perhaps a serious vote from the design community could provide whatever shred of redemption may be left of Mexico City's little identity crisis.
this one's got my vote...
i'd be interested in seeing everyone else's vote
On Dec.02.2008 at 05:39 PMEstela’s comment is:
I think design contests like this one are a good thing for talented young mexican designers, it gives them the opportunity to prove that there is good design in Mexico. Apparently, this proves me wrong, but I'm a bit of an idealist, so i won't give up hope.

In my opinion, the slogan "Besame Mucho" is completely awful... but what we can expect from Marcelo Ebrard's government? who is repeating the same mistakes and foolishnesses of his predecessor (and chief) Lopez Obrador...
But if we have to choose one... I choose the one that Morgan Smail chose, it looks good...

Well I know is a shame... this shows just how
corruption works in all senses here at Mexico
this stupid contest is just for government to take that money...
this really pisses me off because there are a lot of good people for this job and government think we are stupid to believe there was a good process to choose finalist? or what???
Even there's a logo that was taken out the contest, they should vote again and select another finalist, that just shows how bad this is
and it's a shame because even the world is going to know it...damn!!!
Shame*shame*shame
Ka’s comment is:
They nos disquialified one of the finalists because he cheated and stole the image for the work presented.
And now, it has been discover than 2 more of the finalist are probably under copyright problems too.

On Dec.03.2008 at 04:40 PMdamon’s comment is:
blah, those are all terrible!
and the reason is probably because real designers don't enter those "design our logo" contests.
I'm way too busy to spend hours of work on some iffy contest. Those are for first year design students who want to make a name for themselves.
which is sort of what they got by the looks of it.
On Dec.03.2008 at 05:03 PMPakis’s comment is:
Well, the shame is not just on the government of the city, but in the community of professional designers; they are a mediocrity who lacks of imagination and regularly produce bad, dumb designs.
The people sometimes produce designs that professional cannot produce.
An example is the design of the new Volkswagen beetle, a product from Mexican college students that was initially rejected by professional designers.
Put to work your imagination, if any, or go to work to GM.
Ciao.

An incredible sad story! Horrible designs.
If you see Martha Chapa as jury, you know this can not end well.
All my love to Mexico.
Mark’s comment is:
I vote none of the above they all suck, if I vote least suckiest maybe 4, but even that one isn't that great.
1 looks like a damn rave poster
2 looks like a freaking hospital logo
3 looks better for a damn stamp
4 almost barely looks like a mail service logo
5 is the least non offensive since there's nothing there HA!
I WANT ANOTHER CHOICE!
On Dec.05.2008 at 09:23 AMJosé Luis Rincón Esparza’s comment is:
Like it has been already said, I just hoped the international design community could ignore this chapter of history. It´s depressing and a shame that the biggest and most known city in our beautiful country will be represented by one of those "finalists".
It´s embarrasing to find this here at Brand New.
We as mexican designers feel obliged to inform the community that this is definetly NOT the best we can do. I´m terribly sorry, I participated in this stupid contest and currently feel (like many others) that I´ve been ripped off.
I´m fully aware that my logo design was not the best out there, but at least it was better than the ones that will earn more than a thousand american dollars.
I´m sorry. Hopefully this mess will be forgotten rather quickly.

Alright, so.
Yes, the finalist are -bad-.
And yes, I realize you have a professional stake in the business, and know what you're talking about, etc.
I just wanted to say, the shameless "only a professional can do a logo right" attitude is kind of annoying.
People have come from nowhere with amazing ideas before, and 'professionals' have gaffed many a time.
This is not one of those cases where an amazing idea happened from a 'nobody'... but it could have been.
And there's nothing to stop a 'professional' from entering on their own.
I'm just saying.
On Dec.22.2008 at 01:23 PMGabriel Martínez Meave’s comment is:
I agree with Armin. Spec doesn’t work. However, its good for BrandNew to cover this issue. But it’s important to state that in spite of this wreck there are very good designners in Mexico that are not happy with these results. The shame goes to Mexico City government.
Saludos, Gabriel.
Ana’s comment is:
Just an update, several finalists were disqualified (for using images they had no permission to, one even used an istock photo image with the seal still on it) and they're choosing a few more.
On Jan.11.2009 at 08:26 PMM’s comment is:
Wow, there are so many entries that are better than the finalists and they choose the ones that look like low-res clip art.
