Deep within the recesses of the year 1964 and the New Jersey city of Hoboken, Blimpie has been making barely acceptable sub sandwiches nationwide that are just barely less better than their main competitor, Subway. But my opinion of the taste of their subs doesn’t really matter, what matters is that in contrast to Subway, Blimpie has always had the “funner” look and feel, helped in no small part by its cute name. The previous logo and the iterations before it were fun and distinctive, even if not great or influential. The new logo… Yeah, it’s Futura Extra Bold, set in all caps, woo-hoo. Going from fun and distinctive to boring and generic, which matches the taste of their lettuce, I’ll grant that. Every now and then we mention how redesigns are lost opportunities and sometimes it’s just hot air, but in this case, I really think it was a blatant miss.
Thanks to Josh Berta for the tip.

Gotta agree on this one. I don't think subs, food, fun, flavor, or anything else. I think bland. I actually like the new look in and of itself for the header of a blog about minimalism, it just doesn't work for food.

I don't understand who is convincing all of these brands to switch to modern minimalist designs.
With the word "Blimpie" you are expecting a rounded, fatter concept. Perhaps they should keep the new font and change the name to "Bricks" instead.

They even used to be "basic but not bad":
(from their website's homepage)
They should have gone back to the one on the black & white photo. And if they needed to be trendy, they could have added "original, since 1964".

It's hard to think of a single positive thing to say about this change. It's gone from having some kind of character to the generic strip mall "we can't afford a designer for a logo" sign look. This is one time I'd love to hear the rationale from the company itself and/or designer responsible for the change.

Does this even count as a redesign? Isn't the process of a redesign, even when it fails, supposed to push the brand in a different direction?
Frankly, this just looks like some internal marketing team decided to type out BLIMPIE set in futura extra bold in a Word Document and everyone wet their pants thinking hey, we just got a new logo for FREE.
I know times are tough, but come on BLIMPIE. This isn't even like they tried a decent redesign and failed. Its just generic type. What does early 19th century industrial revolution machine-type have to do with mediocre sandwhiches?

Being a web designer, you tend to base your design around the logo because if you don't the logo is going to clash with its surroundings. If you take a look at their site, you can see that they took it in the same direction. Bland. They look like more of a start up than they do an established company. The logo expresses that as well.
I think they should have changed their tagline to "We Blend In."

Perfection. I can't even begin to imagine the time, patience, discipline and extraordinary skill it took to set and kern this logotype. The color choice is so effervescently fresh, yet timeless in the way it works with and plays off the white background. I don't see any room for improvement, except maybe filling the counters of the letters with yellow.

it might be because I'm not exactly a graphic designer, but the new 'logo' stretches the definition of the word 'design' - it's literally one line of futura caps with another line of futura underneath it. The first one has the circle in the 'b', the coloured dots above the 'i's, and the little subtext tucked into the socket created by the 'p' - it's got personality, it's got character, and you're right, it fits the name, and the feel (I used to get subs there when I'd tag along to my dad's shop, years ago) of the business themselves.

On Feb.05.2009 at 11:28 AMJude Landry’s comment is:
I can't totally agree that this is the wrong direction until I see it more in other applications. The old logo wasn't great: goofy-looking italic round letters with yellow dots on the i's that are barely visible. To me, the new Blimpie looks more confident and serious, unafraid to be bold and simple. I realize it's not a stunning logo, and it took about 5 seconds to make, but that's not the point. Blimpie probably wants to distance itself from Subway, and if that's the case, then this is a good move. I might've chosen some type with more contrast and personality, but overall, it's not that bad.
On Feb.05.2009 at 11:32 AMMatt (different from above)’s comment is:
As everyone already stated, this redesign sucks. At least do something to the type, make it custom in someway shape or form, so that no one else can just type it out and have the exact same logo.
Dale + R.Berger hit it on the nose. It does look like the type treatment you put on a sign out front of a strip mall, and then blimpie thought: "Why don't we just make THAT our logo, then we'll be CONSISTENT! "?
Blimpie must be losing their minds as well
On Feb.05.2009 at 11:36 AMadam’s comment is:
man, the negative space between some of the letters really bothers me . . . like after the B and either side of the P (ha, around the I also, and M). those areas really vibrate and makes me unable to look diretly at the mark for more than a second or two at a time lest my head explode.

On Feb.05.2009 at 11:59 AMJared Guay’s comment is:
The reworking of the word BLIMPIE is definitely a failure due to under kerning, but the America's Sub Shop set below really doesn't bother me that much. If they could take that text and replace the Subs and Salads below the old logo, it would then at least be a decent reworking.

I know its not Gotham, but it looks like someone said, "Let's make the logo look like Obama's stuff." Adding the "America's Sub Shop" reinforces that feeling for me. Let's all hop on the Obama/Hope bandwagon.
And I'm with CJ, why drop the salads from your tagline, are you not making salads anymore, do you want all the salad eaters to just walk on by?
It also feels like a (failed) attempt to make the brand look more classy. To bump it up to Panera or Au Bon Pain and not be classed with Subway. Of course if that were the goal, it would be really hard to accomplish without dumping the name Blimpie entirely. It's really hard to think higher end sandwich shop with the name Blimpie. I think the only way to do that is what Yves suggested. Have a really retro brand that says, "we've been doing this for a long time, so we must be good."

It's simply unmemorable. Blimpie is such a weak brand in my mind, now it's completely forgettable. What a shame they went this direction.
On Feb.07.2009 at 11:12 AMKodie’s comment is:
This is like KFC no longer taking responsibility for (or calling attention to) the Fried Chicken in their name. If you are Blimpie, you can't turn your back on that and pretend you are not "Blimpie." I think changing the mark here is a good way to "go out of business" and rename the business so they can do something more generic and less obviously fattening, like Subway or Quizno's. They are all the same but only one makes you feel like a tub o' lard for buying a sandwich.
The only thing stupider than being caught with a restaurant name that really piles on the fat guilt of constantly dieting Americans than Blimpie is a place that rhymes with 'dreck':
So I guess I just see this change as a really vain attempt to reverse the impression that the lingering language cannot simply deny. The word still says Blimpie, and everyone knows that's not an airy version of a submarine or torpedo sandwich. It calls to vision obesity and waddling. No company wants to be associated with that, especially with Subway's Jared, still famous for his massive weight loss. He didn't go to Blimpie - would you? I really don't think the new brand fails on blandness alone, but on the aspect that short of a name change, it can't really do anything else to take attention off its name, the fact that it's "Blimpie".

The old logo was ugly, but has been around so long that they should not change it.

Don't you think someone at the top of the Blimpie's food chain could have said, "we paid them for 1/2 hour of time for this".

I prefer Togo's rather than Blimpie.

Is it just me or does the new logo remind me more of a superstore than a deli? I liked the old logo, it was cute...

There's something about the typography of the redesign that makes me read the name as BLIM PIE.

not even a logo as far as I'm concerned -- just a poor type treatment.

Being UK-based I'm not familiar with this brand, but oh-dear...
Definitely a retrograde step. Poor execution - a missed opportunity for sure. I'd have liked to have seen a more sympathetic restyle of the old lettering, maybe lose the italics?
The introduction of 'America's Sub Shop' as the positioning statement could have allowed for a bolder interpretation perhaps.

I agree with Kevin’s comment: For the first I read this as Blim Pie as opposed to Blimpie. And, wow, doesn't the 'I' seem too close to the 'E'?

Wow, I never realized how good the old one was until they redesigned it.

Here's how it happened....
"Quick, we need a redesign! 60 seconds and it has to go to print!
Type! No.... faster, faster, faster! We don't have time!
Quick, make it green! No, not that green, match our current green!
Good! Go! Go! Send it to the fabricator!
Nice job, guys."
Yep it's nice when a Mac is used like a typewriter. It's a thing of beauty.

it just doesn't fit with what they serve it just doesn't fit!
At least the old logo was playful and looked somewhat like a grinder, this new one is stone cold boring!
